For the first time ever, the I.S.E.O. Institute established the “Franco Modigliani – Robert Solow – I.S.E.O. Temporary Chair in Economic Sciences” at the University of Brescia: on the 14th December 2023, the Academic Senate of the University approved the temporary chair entitled after the I.S.E.O. Institute, its founder Franco Modigliani and past president Robert Solow, who died at the end of 2023. A long-lasting dream of the I.S.E.O. Institute is finally coming true.
The temporary chair provides “the annual assignment of the qualification of Franco Modigliani – Robert Solow – I.S.E.O. Professor to an economist awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics or to an economist of international renown,” states the resolution of the Academic Senate.
Thanks to the precious and long-lasting partnership between the I.S.E.O. Institute and the University of Brescia, every year the faculty of Economics of the University of Brescia will feature – even if for a short time – a Nobel Prize for Economics as visiting professor (something never happened before in the University of Brescia): his/her lectures are addressed to students enrolled in the master’s degree and PhD.
“We are really proud – explains Riccardo Venchiarutti, who became president of the I.S.E.O. Institute after the death of Robert Solow – to be able to offer students from Brescia the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to attend lectures held by Nobel Prize winners for Economics: and we are even happier knowing that the newly established chair bears the name of our founder Franco Modigliani and our president Robert Solow, two world wide important economists but, even more, two extraordinary men to whom the world owes a lot”.
The chair was activated in 2024, in June: the first Nobel Prize selected by the two bodies was ROBERT ENGLE, Nobel Laureate in Economics 2003. His course was titled “Climate Finance”.
Professor Engle conducted a few classes for the students of the University of Brescia together with two other economists: Lucia Alessi (European Commission, JRC) who lectured on “Sustainable Finance” and Michael Donadelli (University of Brescia) who gave a talk on “Pricing Climate Change-Related Risks”.
