48TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

Brescia, 26th of June 2015

Palazzo Martinengo Colleoni

The Global Economy and Local Politics

Speakers

Zygmunt Bauman

Emeritus professor of Sociology at Leeds University

The 46th International Public Conference promoted by I.S.E.O Institute represented an incredible success: nearly 300 people attended to the fascinating meeting with Professor Zygmunt Bauman, one of the internationally most recognized sociologists in the world.

The ninety-year-old Polish professor took special focus on the concepts of globalization and glocalization: in his lectio magitralis, he discussed the emergence of global interdependence and rise in migration after which he elaborated also on the crisis of the territorially sovereign state. Professor Bauman also emphasized the differences between global politics and international politics, in other words interministerial politics. He widely focused on one the most peculiar aspect of contemporary world: the divorce between power and politics.

Bauman, who spent most of his career teaching at the University of Leeds, stressed the magnitude of the global problems being encountered at the very moment and concluded that solutions to problems should first be found locally.

“This crisis is very different from the one which took place in 1929”, said the Polish professor in Brescia. “At that time, people knew who would have solved problems: the States. And they all trusted in government’s power and strength. That strength brought us two of the most horrible dictatorships in history but also brought us New Deal. On the contrary, today we don’t have any power in which we trust. Problems are spread globally but solutions should come locally: and at a local level, no one has the power to solve problems”.

Professor Bauman’s lecture ended with wild applauses, which served as a nice way to end the 46th International Public Conference. The meeting was moderated by Maurizio Cattaneo, editor in chief of the newspaper Bresciaoggi, and Giacomo Scanzi, editor in chief of of the newspaper Giornale di Brescia.
