The I.S.E.O. Institute is pleased to promote, in agreement with the University of Brescia and the support of BCC Agrobresciano, the 57th edition of the conference entitled “The long demographic winter in Italy and Europe. Health and pension risks“.

The topic at the heart of the meeting is topical, economic, social and not only. In addition to the climate emergency, there is in fact another node that has long been considered a priority: the demographic, not only in Italy but throughout the Old Continent.

In particular, the conference will deal with a less known but extremely significant aspect of the so-called “demographic winter”. The ageing of the population in the European Union has, among other things, significant impacts on health and pension expenditure. This is especially the case in countries such as Italy, where three dynamics converge: (1) the ageing of the population that raises the demand for health services; (2) imbalances in the demographic structure of the workforce with significant cohorts of retired doctors and nurses, and (3) the decline of the population in rural and more remote areas which makes it more expensive to maintain adequate coverage of local health services.

So what are the impacts on health and pensions? And what are the long-term scenarios?

The conference, with the introduction of Roberto Savona (University of Brescia), addresses these questions by relying on three experts: Tito Boeri (Bocconi University), Fabiana Scapolo and Fabrizio Natale (European Commission).

During the meeting, moderated by the vice president of the I.S.E.O. Institute Riccardo Venchiarutti, will be presented the preliminary results drawn up by the European Commission on the demographic dynamics expected in the countries of the European Union up to 2070, and the impact on health and pension expenditure will be discussed later.
