After two years heavily affected by the Covid-19 pandemics, the I.S.E.O. Summer School was finally back in presence in June 2022.
The 18th edition of the postgraduate course in Economics took place from the 18th until the 25th of June in the picturesque town of Iseo, a small city on the shores of lake Iseo (Northern Italy) at the 4-star Iseolago Hotel.
This was the first edition ever held with a complete hybrid mode: lecturers and participants were both online and in presence, gathering a total of 91 attendees (65 in presence and 26 online) coming from 31 different countries and 66 universities around the world. As per the panel of the speakers, it featured some of the most renowned experts in international economics, including 4 Nobel Laureates.
Going into details, the 2022 edition focused on the title “The post pandemic economic recovery”. Ten internationally acknowledged speakers were invited to hold the lectures: Michael Spence (Nobel Laureate 2001, New York University), Esther Duflo (Nobel Laureate 2019), her husband Abhijit Banerjee (Nobel Laureate 2019) and Muhammad Yunus (Nobel Laureate for Peace 2006). The I.S.E.O. Summer School 2022 also featured Daron Acemoglu (Mit Boston), Gernot Wagner (New York University / Columbia Business School), Robert Wescott (president of Keybridge Research and former economic advisor to the White house), Daniele Bianchi (Queen Mary University of London) and Michela Nardo (European Commission).
Following a long lasting tradition, three Summer School participants had the chance to present their own research in a “Your lecture” experience in front of the whole group of attendees, coordinated by prof. Sergio Vergalli (University of Brescia). This year the “Your lecture” presentations were given by Luca Alfieri (University of Tartu), Evgeniya Dubinina (Charles University) and Davide Castellani (Collegio Carlo Alberto, University of Turin).
During the I.S.E.O. Summer School 2022, participants joined an international public conference promoted jointly by the I.S.E.O. Institute and by the close by University of Brescia– Faculty of Economics. The conference represented the 54th seminar organized in memory of the I.S.E.O. Institute’s founder, Franco Modigliani, and it was titled “Pandemic, war. Compound risks in uncertain geopolitical scenarios”. The public meeting featured Michael Spence and Simone Manganelli (ECB) as main speakers. The conference was also streamed live on YouTube.
However, the I.S.E.O. Summer School was not only about studying and discussing economics: as usual, the coursed offered much more to experience! Participants had the unique opportunity to interact with lecturers during breakfast, lunch and dinner, and they also had the time to network with other participants from all over the world.
During the week, attendees enjoyed also some free time: relaxing by the pool of the Iseolago hotel, exploring the beautiful Iseo city and visiting Monte Isola island. The Summer School organized also a daytrip to Verona, the charming city of Romeo and Juliet, and a kayak tour on lake Iseo. Another long-awaited activity was the gala dinner at the prestigious Berlucchi vinery: during that night participants received their I.S.E.O. Summer School diplomas from Robert Wescott.
As its previous editions, the I.S.E.O. Summer School 2022 was an unforgettable experience: during the course, participants did not only deepen their knowledge in economics, but also created long-lasting memories and friendships.
